What Are Fractions?
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number). Fractions are everywhere in daily life — from cooking measurements to construction to financial calculations.
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
To add or subtract fractions, first find a common denominator. For example, 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. Once the denominators match, simply add or subtract the numerators.
Multiplying Fractions
Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. For example, 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. Simplify the result by dividing both numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
Dividing Fractions
To divide fractions, flip the second fraction (find its reciprocal) and multiply. For example, 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2.
