What Is an IP Address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. It serves two main functions: identifying your device on the network and providing your approximate geographical location.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4: The original addressing system using 32-bit numbers (e.g., 192.168.1.1). It supports about 4.3 billion addresses — not enough for modern internet usage. IPv6: The newer system using 128-bit addresses (e.g., 2001:db8::1), providing a virtually unlimited number of addresses.
What Your IP Reveals
Your public IP address can reveal your approximate location (usually city level), your internet service provider, and whether you are using a VPN or proxy. It does not reveal your exact street address or name without additional information from your ISP.
