About Sleep Cycle Calculator

Sleep isn't a uniform state from lights-out to alarm — it moves through repeating cycles, each made up of light sleep, deep sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, in that general order. A typical adult sleep cycle lasts around 90 minutes, though it can range from about 70 to 120 minutes depending on the person and the night. In reality, total sleep duration still matters enormously — four cycles (6 hours) hitting a clean cycle boundary is still less total sleep than most adults need for long-term health, even if the wake-up moment itself feels less groggy than an equivalent 6-hour sleep that ends mid-cycle. Think of cycle-timing as a way to optimise how a given amount of sleep feels when you wake up, not a way to need less sleep overall.
