About BMI Calculator

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple ratio of weight to height, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared (kg/m²), or, in imperial units, 703 × weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared. It was devised in the 1830s by the Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet — not as a health metric at all, but as a way to describe the statistical distribution of body size across a population. It only became a clinical screening tool in the 1970s and 1980s, when researchers found it correlated reasonably well with body fat percentage across large groups of people, and it has been used by the World Health Organization and most national health services as a quick population-level screening measure ever since. The appeal of BMI is its simplicity: it needs only two numbers everyone already knows — height and weight — and produces a single figure that can be checked against a standard table in seconds, with no scales, callipers, or scans required. The World Health Organization defines four standard adult categories: below 18.5 is Underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is Normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is Overweight, and 30 and above is Obese (which is further subdivided clinically into Class I, II and III, though this tool shows the single "Obese" band used on most public health resources). These thresholds were derived from population studies linking BMI to increased risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers, and they remain the reference range used by the NHS, the CDC and the WHO today. BMI's central limitation is that it cannot distinguish between muscle and fat — it only measures total mass relative to height. A rugby player or bodybuilder with very low body fat can score as "Overweight" or "Obese" purely because muscle is denser than fat, while a sedentary person with little muscle mass can score "Normal" while carrying a high body fat percentage (sometimes called "skinny fat" or normal-weight obesity). BMI also does not account for age, sex, frame size, or where fat is distributed on the body — a factor increasingly recognised as clinically important, since visceral fat around the abdomen carries different health risks than fat elsewhere, which is why waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio are often used alongside BMI rather than as replacements for it. BMI is also known to be less reliable for children and adolescents (who need age- and sex-specific growth charts, not the adult table), for pregnant women, for people over roughly 65 (where a slightly higher BMI is not associated with the same increased risk as in younger adults), and for some ethnic groups — several Asian national health bodies use lower BMI thresholds (23 for overweight, 27.5 for obese) because research shows health risk rises at lower BMI values in these populations compared with the standard WHO cutoffs used here. Despite these limitations, BMI remains useful as a fast, free, first-pass screening number — a reason to look closer, not a diagnosis in itself. Most clinicians use it as one data point among several (blood pressure, waist circumference, blood glucose, family history, lifestyle) rather than as a standalone verdict on someone's health. Negative or non-numeric weight/height are rejected the same way. Extremely small height values (e.g. entering centimetres in the metres-equivalent field by mistake) will produce an implausibly high BMI — the tool does not attempt to guess unit-entry mistakes, so double-check that centimetres, not metres, go in the metric height field. What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults, the World Health Organization defines 18.5–24.9 as the "Normal weight" range. Below 18.5 is classed Underweight, 25–29.9 Overweight, and 30 or above Obese.
Is BMI accurate for athletes and bodybuilders?
No, not reliably. BMI cannot distinguish muscle from fat, so people with high muscle mass and low body fat (athletes, bodybuilders) often score as "Overweight" or "Obese" despite being lean. Body fat percentage or a DEXA scan gives a more accurate picture for muscular individuals.
Does BMI work the same way for men and women?
The WHO BMI formula and category thresholds used here are the same for adult men and women. BMI does not adjust for the fact that women naturally carry a higher average body fat percentage than men at the same BMI — this is a known limitation, not something the formula accounts for.
Is this calculator suitable for children?
No. Children and teenagers need age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age growth charts (percentiles), not the fixed adult thresholds used here. Use a paediatric growth chart or ask a doctor for a child's BMI assessment.

Is BMI the same as body fat percentage?
No. BMI is a weight-to-height ratio and does not measure fat directly. Two people can share the exact same BMI while having very different body fat percentages, depending on how much of their weight is muscle versus fat.
