About BMR Calculator
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body burns in 24 hours doing absolutely nothing — no walking, no digesting food, no exercise, just keeping your heart beating, your lungs breathing, your brain functioning, your cells repairing themselves, and your body temperature regulated. It is measured, in a laboratory setting, on someone lying completely still in a fasted state after 8 hours of sleep in a thermally neutral room. Almost nobody actually experiences a day at true BMR, but it serves as the essential baseline for every other calorie estimate: your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is your BMR plus the calories burned through digestion, movement and exercise on top of it, which is why BMR is the first number any calorie or macro calculation needs to start from.
Because a true lab measurement (indirect calorimetry, which analyses the oxygen and carbon dioxide in your breath) is impractical for everyday use, researchers have developed predictive equations that estimate BMR from a handful of easily measured variables: weight, height, age and sex. The oldest widely used version, the Harris-Benedict equation, was originally published in 1919 and revised in 1984 to correct a systematic overestimate found in the original formula. It remained the default clinical and fitness-industry standard for decades. In 1990, Mifflin and St Jeor published a new equation, developed from a larger and more contemporary sample of the population, which numerous validation studies since have found to be more accurate than Harris-Benedict for most people today — likely because average body composition and lifestyle have shifted since 1919. Mifflin-St Jeor is now the equation most commonly recommended by dietitians and used as the default in clinical nutrition software, which is why this tool leads with it and shows the revised Harris-Benedict figure alongside for comparison rather than as the primary result.
Both equations take the same four inputs — weight, height, age and sex — and combine them with different coefficients derived from their respective research populations. Neither equation directly measures body composition (the ratio of muscle to fat), which is the single biggest limiter of accuracy for both formulas: muscle tissue burns meaningfully more calories at rest than fat tissue, so someone who is unusually muscular for their weight will have a real BMR somewhat higher than either formula predicts, and someone with unusually low muscle mass for their weight will run somewhat lower. A separate formula, Katch-McArdle, addresses this by using lean body mass directly instead of total weight — but it requires a body fat percentage measurement as an input (from calipers, a bioelectrical impedance scale, or a DEXA scan), which most people do not have on hand, so it is not included here.
BMR naturally declines with age (roughly 1–2% per decade after your twenties, largely due to gradual muscle loss unless resistance-trained against), and varies with genetics, hormone levels (thyroid function in particular has a large effect), and body size — a larger body, even at the same body-fat percentage, has more tissue to maintain and therefore a higher BMR. Worked example: a 30-year-old woman, 65 kg, 165 cm.
• Mifflin-St Jeor: (10 × 65) + (6.25 × 165) − (5 × 30) − 161 = 650 + 1,031.25 − 150 − 161 = 1,370.25 kcal/day.
• Harris-Benedict: (9.247 × 65) + (3.098 × 165) − (4.330 × 30) + 447.593 = 601.06 + 511.17 − 129.9 + 447.593 = 1,429.9 kcal/day.
The two equations typically land within 3–5% of each other; Mifflin-St Jeor tends to read slightly lower, which most validation studies since 1990 have found to be the closer match to measured BMR in contemporary populations.
Edge cases handled automatically: age, height or weight of zero (or blank) shows "—" instead of a nonsensical negative or zero result. Negative inputs are rejected the same way. This tool is calibrated for adults — the equations are not validated for children, and pregnancy significantly increases metabolic rate in ways neither formula accounts for.

Which formula is more accurate, Mifflin-St Jeor or Harris-Benedict?
Most validation studies since the 1990s have found Mifflin-St Jeor to be more accurate for the general population today, which is why dietitians and clinical nutrition software commonly default to it. The revised 1984 Harris-Benedict equation is shown alongside for comparison — the two typically differ by only 3-5%.
Why do these formulas need my age and sex?
BMR declines with age (roughly 1-2% per decade after your twenties, mainly due to gradual muscle loss), and men typically carry more muscle mass than women at the same body weight, which raises resting energy needs. Both formulas use age and sex as proxies for these effects since neither measures muscle mass directly.
Can two people with the same height, weight, age and sex have different BMRs?
Yes, in reality. These equations are statistical estimates based on population averages — actual BMR is also affected by muscle mass, genetics, thyroid function and other factors the formulas cannot see. A more muscular person than average, at the same stats, will have a real BMR somewhat higher than either formula predicts.
Is BMR the number of calories I should eat to lose weight?

Does muscle mass affect BMR?
Yes, significantly. Muscle tissue is metabolically active and burns more calories at rest than fat tissue. Someone with more muscle for their body weight will have a real BMR higher than these formulas predict, since neither Mifflin-St Jeor nor Harris-Benedict measures body composition directly.
Why is there no Katch-McArdle option here?
The Katch-McArdle formula estimates BMR from lean body mass rather than total weight, which is more accurate for very lean or very muscular people — but it requires a body fat percentage measurement (from calipers, a smart scale, or a DEXA scan) as an input, which most people do not have readily available.
Does BMR change over time?
Yes. BMR gradually declines with age, mainly from loss of muscle mass, and can also change with significant weight loss or gain, thyroid conditions, and pregnancy. It is worth recalculating every few months if your weight changes meaningfully.
Are these formulas accurate for very lean or very overweight people?
Both equations are less reliable at the extremes of body composition — very muscular, very lean, or significantly overweight individuals tend to see larger gaps between the formula estimate and their measured BMR than someone of average build.

What is the most accurate way to measure BMR?
