Typing Speed Test

Typing speed is usually measured in words per minute (WPM), and the standard convention behind that number is simpler than it looks: a "word" for typing-test purposes is defined as any five characters, not an actual dictionary word, because real words vary wildly in length and a five-character standard keeps the measurement consistent no matter what text you're typing. So WPM is calculated as (correctly typed characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed — someone who correctly types 250 characters in one minute is typing at 50 WPM, regardless of whether those characters formed five 50-character words or fifty 5-character ones. This tool implements that standard calculation directly. A small bank of original practice paragraphs, each roughly 40 to 80 words of plain, everyday English, is built into the page — one is picked at random every time you start a test, so repeated attempts don't just become memorization. The reference paragraph is displayed as a sequence of individually styled characters rather than a plain block of text, which is what makes live color-coded feedback possible: as you type in the box below, each corresponding character in the reference text is recolored green if it matches what you typed, red if it doesn't, or left in its default gray if you haven't reached it yet. This character-by-character comparison happens on every keystroke, so feedback is immediate rather than appearing only once you finish. Getting the timing right matters for a fair result: the clock does not start when the page loads or when you click "Start New Test" — it starts on your very first keystroke. This avoids penalizing you for however long you spend reading the paragraph before you begin typing, which would otherwise make the WPM number reflect your reading speed as much as your typing speed. The test then ends automatically the moment your typed text reaches the same length as the reference paragraph, stopping the timer at exactly that point rather than requiring you to click a separate "finish" button. Accuracy is calculated as the percentage of typed characters that exactly match their corresponding reference character, out of every character you've typed so far (correct characters ÷ total characters typed × 100). This means accidental extra characters — for example, if you accidentally paste or type more text than the reference paragraph contains — are counted against you in the accuracy figure rather than causing an error, since the comparison logic is deliberately written to handle a typed string that's longer than the reference text without crashing or producing a nonsensical result; anything beyond the reference length simply isn't compared to a corresponding character; it's still counted in the total for accuracy purposes. Once the test finishes, a summary shows your final words-per-minute, accuracy percentage, and total time taken, and a "Try Again" button resets everything with a freshly picked random paragraph, so you can immediately compare attempts and track improvement over multiple tries.
