What changes is how the data is packaged internally, not the data itself. It is important to understand what this tool does not do: it does not recompress embedded JPEG images (which are already compressed), it does not downsample high-resolution images to lower resolution, and it does not remove content. The compressor uses pdf-lib's save() method with the useObjectStreams option enabled, which is the primary mechanism for PDF file size reduction at the structure level. Object streams were introduced in PDF 1.5 and allow multiple non-stream objects to be grouped and compressed with FlateDecode (zlib). The tool also sets addDefaultPage: false to avoid injecting a blank page into single-page documents. The compression is entirely lossless — page content streams, embedded fonts, and images are preserved exactly as in the original. The output is a valid PDF 1.5+ file. Compression ratios vary significantly by document: text-heavy PDFs with repetitive content (forms, contracts) often compress 30-50%; image-heavy PDFs may see only 1-5% reduction; PDFs already produced by modern software (e.g. Microsoft Word save as PDF, Adobe Acrobat optimised save) may see minimal or no reduction.
