How to Use PDF Splitter

Upload your PDF and you will see a grid of page thumbnails. Click individual pages to select or deselect them, or use the Select All / Deselect All buttons. Only the pages you select will be included in the output. Click Split & Download to save a new PDF containing just your chosen pages. The original file is never modified or uploaded.

About PDF Splitter

PDF Splitter solves the common problem of needing just a few pages from a large PDF: the relevant pages of a contract, the appendix you actually need, the section of a report that applies to your team, or the receipt page from a multi-page invoice. Instead of emailing a 200-page PDF and asking the recipient to scroll to page 47, you extract what matters and send a focused 3-page document. The tool displays each page as a numbered thumbnail after you upload a file, making it easy to visually identify which pages you want. You can click any page to toggle it on or off, and bulk-select across ranges using the Select All button. The extraction itself copies only the selected pages into a brand-new PDF — the original file is read into browser memory, processed locally by JavaScript, and the extracted pages are packaged into a new download. Nothing is uploaded to any server at any point. The output is a standards-compliant PDF. Pages keep their original dimensions, rotation, text, images, and vector graphics. The extraction uses the same page-copying mechanism as a desktop PDF editor, preserving content fidelity without re-encoding or quality loss. If the source document has selectable text, the output does too. If the source has searchable text content, it remains searchable in the result. For more complex splitting operations — such as extracting pages 1-3, 7, and 12-15 at once — use multiple selection rounds (extract pages 1-3 first, then reload the original and extract 7, then 12-15) or combine the tool with PDF Merger afterwards. The tool is designed to handle single-range selections efficiently; combining multiple ranges can be done by running the tool and merging the results. Page numbering in the selection grid matches the PDF's internal numbering (1-based). If your PDF reader shows different page numbers (e.g. because of Roman-numeral frontmatter), note that the tool uses the absolute page index — page 1 is always the first physical page of the document.

Details & Tips

The splitter uses pdf-lib for page extraction and pdfjs-dist for page thumbnail rendering. When you upload a PDF, pdfjs-dist renders each page to an HTML5 canvas at a reduced scale for the thumbnail grid — this is a separate step from the actual extraction and does not affect output quality. The extraction itself is performed by pdf-lib, which copies page objects from the source document by reference, preserving all content streams. The output document uses object streams for better compression. The tool respects the page rotation and media box of each extracted page. If you select zero pages, the download button is disabled — you must select at least one page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my PDF pages get uploaded to a server?
No. The entire operation — reading the PDF, rendering page previews, and extracting selected pages — happens locally in your browser. Your file never leaves your device.
Can I select non-consecutive pages?
Yes. Each page thumbnail acts as a toggle — click to select or deselect any combination of pages. The output will contain only the pages you selected, in their original order.
Will the extracted pages keep the original formatting?
Yes. Pages are copied directly from the source PDF, preserving text, images, fonts, vector graphics, and page dimensions. The output pages are identical to the originals.
How are the pages numbered in the preview grid?
Pages are numbered from 1 (the first physical page of the document). If your PDF uses different numbering in its headers or footers (like Roman numerals for a preface), those are cosmetic and do not affect the page index used by this tool.
Can I split a PDF into individual pages at once?
Currently you extract one set of pages at a time. To split a 50-page PDF into 50 individual files, select all pages, download one combined file, then re-upload and extract each page individually — or use a desktop tool for batch splitting. A batch-split feature may be added in a future update.
Does this work on password-protected PDFs?
No. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be read by browser-based tools. Remove the password first using a desktop PDF application.
What is the maximum PDF size?
The site-wide maximum upload size defaults to 50 MB. Very large PDFs with hundreds of pages may be slow to render previews — the tool will warn you if the file has more than 100 pages.
Does the extracted PDF have a watermark?
No. The output is a clean PDF with no watermarks, no added pages, and no branding.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, completely free. No registration, no account, no limits on usage.
Can I use this on a mobile device?
Yes, the tool works on modern mobile browsers. On smaller screens, page thumbnails may appear smaller but remain fully functional.
What happens to hyperlinks and bookmarks in the extracted pages?
Most internal page links and bookmarks are preserved for the pages copied, though links that point to pages not included in the selection will no longer work. Complex interactive elements like form fields may not transfer fully.
